The Plainville football squad is back in action this Friday for its first game of the 2012 campaign.
The Blue Devils are home for a Division III interdivisional battle against double-tough Bloomfield.
Plainville, 5-5 last season, will once again hit the scene under head coach Chris Farrell and look for another competitive campaign, it’s third in a row.
The Blue Devils will have to reload a bit as quarterback Tony Lopizzo and most of its potent running component have graduated.
But there’s plenty returning for Plainville this year and a battle against the Warhawks will show everybody just where the Blue Devils stand.
Here’s the deal between Bloomfield and Plainville:
The Game: Plainville (5-5 last season) at Bloomfield (7-3 in 2011)
Location: Alumni Field, Plainville
Day and Time: Friday, 7 p.m.
Last Season: From Phil Rubin Stadium in Bloomfield, the Blue Devils fell to the Warhawks 39-19.
Record against over the past eight seasons: The Blue Devils are 0-2 against Bloomfield, failing to the Warhawks 49-0 in a contest played an Alumni Field on Oct. 9, 2009.
All-Time Series: Bloomfield carries the series edge 8-2.
Casual facts… Bloomfield had another solid season at 7-3 last year and finished one game in back of Division III-West champion Rocky Hill…speed is usually the friend of the Warhawks and it was something Plainville was able to keep up with in 2011…it will be interesting to see if the Blue Devils still have a little zip in their cleats to match Bloomfield stride for stride…Plainville will have to be wary of speedy David Campbell who is the team’s top running back…Last year, he ran for over 170 yards of offense against the Blue Devils…Slow down the backs and Plainville has a chance to pick up a big victory…This will be a stern test for Plainville’s defense but a doable one and getting a win against Bloomfield would be a big way to start the campaign… And then there’s the “new” Plainville quarterback, senior Dean DeMartinis, who threw a little bit in Lopizzo’s absence in 2011…Senior receivers Chad Welz and Matt Thomas will look to make big receptions for the Blue Devils…Mark DeMartinis will look to run with the ball while a line that consists of seniors Tyler Favreau, Nick Spinelli, Timmy West, Spencer Davis and Kurt Walker…And it will be interesting to see if players like Bristol Central transfer Greg Dunlap can factor into things on the defensive end. He made 16 tackles for the Rams in 2011 as a sophomore…Again, it will be a good season opener for Plainville.
And the winner is…Let’s give the nod to the Plainville in this one as the Blue Devils hope to shut down the run. The Blue Devils pick up a 28-20 decision.
