STAFF WRITERPLAINVILLE – The Plainville girls basketball team continues to impress with victory after victory.
Coming into their game against Maloney, the Blue Devils had won four of five contests. Against the Spartans, they kept their streak going, picking up a big 57-45 victory from the Ivan Wood Gymnasium in Plainville during a CCC South tilt.
The win for Plainville was its third straight while Maloney slipped to 2-13 as the Blue Devils ended any chance of the Spartans to qualify for state tournament play this year.
It was an important victory for Plainville as playoff positioning – along with a return trip to the ever popular CCC Tournament – were on the line. And if the Blue Devils stay the course, both postseason berths are obtainable.
But Maloney proved pesky and despite its losing ledger, the team has shown ability to put points on the board.
However, those wins and victories have proved elusive.
Mya Rios led all Maloney players with 23 big points while canning five three-pointers in the losing effort.
Briana Alicea added eight points while Gabriella Graham netted six but the Spartans just couldn’t find the right combination to produce a win.
On the Plainville side of things, there was no equal for Katy Dressel as she smashed in 24 points while Kelsey Clemens added eight in the winning effort.
Stephanie Martino was critical in the showdown as she flashed in 14 points – hitting three three-pointers – while Carly Martino hit for five and canned a shot from long range.
Also for the Blue Devils, Rachel Lancaster hit for four points while defensive minded Kelly Slabinski hit
for two.
It was a strong start for Plainville in the game as the club outscored Maloney 16-9 over the first period of play while both teams netted 10 apiece in the second as the home team led 26-19 at intermission.
The Spartans outscored Plainville 10-9 in the third period of play but the Blue Devils still led 35-29.
But the home club made it academic as Plainville won the final stanza 22-16 as they picked up a huge 12-point win.
One day later, the Blue Devils were in a real dogfight, leading by two after three quarters of play but eventually fell 56-52 from the Wood gymnasium.
Clemens led Plainville with 19 points while Dressel added 14 in the losing effort.
Kiera Jackson flipped in eight points, Carly Martino had six and Deja Nolan snared four as Middletown picked up its eighth victory of the season.
The Blue Devils fell to 9-8 in the loss.
Plainville trailed 12-10 after one period while holding the Blue Dragons to four points in the second frame and led 19-16 at the half.
