Plant Sale Benefits Friends of Library and Petit Family Foundation

April 16, 2013

The Friends of the Plainville Public Library will sponsor a plant sale from Monday, May 6 through Saturday, May 11 at the library and various other locations around Plainville including: the PlainvilleSeniorCenter May 7 to 9. Gnazzo’s Supermarket on May 10 and 11. InternationalSchool of Cosmology May 7 to 11. A full list of locations is attached below.

The proceeds from the sale will go to benefit the library and the Petit Family Foundation. The plants are Four O’Clocks so named because they open their flowers in late afternoon about 4 o’clock. During the heat of the day, blossoms are closed. The blooms remain open overnight, and close again in the early morning. They are also known for their strong, aromatic fragrance. They are sturdy, bushy plans with showy red, pink, yellow and white trumpet-shaped flowers.

The plants are part of the Michaela’s Garden project. After the tragic July 2007 home invasion and fire in Cheshire that took the lives of Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her daughters Hayley and Michaela, family members tried to salvage anything of value. The Four O’Clock plants in the family garden were particularly dear to Michaela, so they were dug up and replanted in Plainville. Their seeds were harvested to grow anew. All the plants in this sale were cultured from the original Four O’Clocks in Cheshire.

The plants are available for a $5 donation. Each one comes in a “Cow Pot” that can be planted directly into a garden. The cow pots are made of dried and odor free cow manure which will nurture the young plants in their new homes.
