PLAINVILLE – The most deceiving season record in all the state when it comes to scholastic baseball this year belongs to the Plainville Blue Devils.
Entering its game on Wednesday, April 24 against Bristol Eastern, the Blue Devils were carrying a ledger of 2-6.
Everybody knows that the Blue Devils certainly don’t play like team with a .250 winning percentage and against the Lancers, Plainville showed exactly why how deceiving that losing record truly was.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead after only one inning of play and never looked back as Plainville defeated Bristol Eastern 8-4 from Alumni Field.
With the loss, Eastern fell to 4-5 and for the second straight game, the Lancers had a chance to pull out a possible victory but couldn’t put that one offensive drive together to do it.
Plainville moved to 3-6 on the year in the victorious effort.
The night was a bit of a coming out party for senior Matt Thomas as he not only threw a complete game gem but dominated at the plate.
Thomas drilled a two run homer and scored four runs for Plainville as he got on base an impressive four times off two walks, got hit by a pitch and, of course, hit the round-tripper.
Tyler Favreau added to the hit patrol with two hits and three RBI while Tyler Pina added two hits including a single and a double and an RBI.
Also for the Blue Devils, Marc DeMartinis went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Dean DeMartinis added a hit and an RBI while Shane Pugliese also tallied a hit in the winning effort.
Thomas pitched well and gave up only six hits, none of those coming after the fourth stanza.
He walked three batters, struck out seven and held Eastern to a 6-of-26 batting total in the showdown.
For the Lancers, David Sills scooped up two singles, scored a run and drove in one in a losing effort.
Diondrey Sapp, Nick Plachno, Eric Therrien and Ryan Chiasson all tallied hits for Eastern.
Losing pitcher Dave Levesque earned his first loss of the season, going 3.2 innings, giving seven hits, seven earned runs, two walks and striking out five in the effort.
Ryan Chiasson saw his first action on the mound this season and gave up only one earned run in 2.1 innings of relief.
But only after one quick inning of work, Eastern was already in a significant hole.
Levesque hit Thomas with one out and then walked Marc DeMartinis as two runners were on.
Favreau followed with an RBI single to right, Pina sliced a single to left to score DeMartinis for the second run and after Levesque got the second out of the inning, Dean DiMartinis singled to right for the third tally of the frame as Plainville gobbled up a 3-0 push.
In the second inning with, one out, Pugliese singled to center, which led to another plate appearance by Thomas.
He showed his power and sent a long home run to left center to propel the Blue Devils a 5-0 tilt after two completed frames.
But the Lancers struck right back and made a game of it.
Eastern cut the deficit to 5-2 in the third as Sills singled to left with one out and the Lancers started its rally.
Sapp then hit a slicing double to center, scoring Sills, to make it a four run game.
Plachno followed up with a double down the left field line to score Sapp and the Lancers closed the gap to 5-2 after three tilts.
But Eastern wasn’t done with its scoring barrage as the Lancers cut it to 5-4 in the fourth.
With one out in the fourth frame, Ryan Chiasson singled to left and walks to Dave Cugno and Steve Roy quickly loaded the bases.
Sills bounded a single just wide of third to score Chiasson and Jordan Lowrey dropped a sacrifice fly to score Cugno and the deficit was chopped all the way down to one.
But Eastern did not get any closer as Plainville added three insurance runs over the next few innings to keep the opponents at bay.
Plainville came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning over a two-out rally.
With two outs, Levesque walked Thomas and a single by Marc DeMartinis put runners on first and second.
Levesque was lifted for reliever Chiasson and a showdown ensued against fellow lefty Favreau.
Favreau won the battle and hit a double into the left center gap to score both Plainville runners on the base-paths to propel the Blue Devils to a 7-4 lead.
Plainville added a run in the sixth off Chiasson, on a walk to Thomas, a wild pitch, and an RBI single by Mark DeMartinis to make it a four run game.
Eastern was unable to generate any additional scoring in the game and eventually fell 8-4.
NOTES…Matt Thomas will be attending Western New England College next season and that means he’ll be playing against brother Mike and Roger Williams College on the diamond.
