P’ville made progress at end

GLASTONBURY – Maybe the Plainville Legion Senior baseball squad didn’t qualify for the state tournament this past season – only the top four squads from Zone 7 did – but as Post 33’s year came to a close, it certainly played much better.
A two-game winning streak might not be something to brag about at the end of the year but from the way the campaign started, to the middle, to the final few games, Plainville made progress even as it finished up at 7-16 overall and 5-16 in Zone 7 play.
Post 33 finished up with consecutive victories over Glastonbury in 7-5 and 6-2 victories.
“It’s a good way to end the regular season,” said Plainville coach Jim Tufts off the four-run win over Glastonbury. “We had a couple young kids who were up with us tonight that really showed us what we got for next year and showed us some promise.”
Plainville, who only had nine players suited up for its final game of the year, got a huge lift from John and Sam Lindgren.
While the duo spent a lot of time playing in for the Juniors this past spring and summer, John made strides in the outfield while Sam showed everybody while he’s more than a capable back-up catcher.
Those younger players – along with the likes of pitcher Brett Snowden, Rob Pezzulo, Mike Munson, and Kyle Beloin – should make their way up to the senior program next season.
This season, credit belongs to a number of outgoing players – Erik Perrotti, Tony LoPizzo, and Tommy Dinda – who came back from college to play again for the Plainville Legion squad.
If this team can get on track for next season, with leaders such as Cody Charneski, Shane Pugliese, and Matt Thomas returning to the fray, the squad will be in great hands.
And it’s too bad the season couldn’t have been extended as Plainville was really looking forward to the proposed Zone 7 Tournament, which was cancelled due to the fact that just about every squad outside of Plainville and Tri-County had to make-up games during the final week of the campaign.
“We’ve played much better in the last five or six games,” said Tufts who was looking forward to the challenge of the Zone 7 Tournament and exact a little revenge on squads that pounded on Plainville during the season.
