From June 23 to Aug. 22, the Wheeler YMCA is encouraging parents to help keep their kids be physically active and mentally engaged by signing them up for the YMCA Camp Wheeler. Summer is a critical out-of-school time when children and teens can benefit from enriched learning, new experiences and making new friendships. The Y’s camp offers all of this and more.
“While summer should be a time of exploration, youth are sometimes less involved in activities that stimulate their mind and body,” said Tim Gabbard, CampDirector, YMCA Camp Wheeler in a press release. “When at CampWheeler, kids have the opportunity to get outdoors and learn about nature, take on new responsibilities, gain independence, and develop essential social skills and new relationships. As a result, they become more confident, open to trying new things and growing as individuals and as part of a group.”
The release said, “YMCA Camp Wheeler provides exciting and educational camp programming for children and teens, including: Teen Camp for students entering grades 6, 7, and 8; Camp Kaleidoscope, a traditional day camp for children entering K-fifth grade; one week specialty camps for children entering first to fifth grade; and counselors in training (CIT) for students entering ninth and 10th grade.”
The release said new to this year’s specialty camp offerings are Super Hero Camp, Music Mania, Dinosaur Daze, and Disney Camp. Back by popular demand will be gymnastics/ cheer/ dance, art camp, Sports Spectacular, Life of a Spy, LEGO Builders, FortBuilders, Myth Busters, and Adventure Camp. The camp day will focus on the main activity but the children will also have fun swimming, playing field games, “and enjoying plenty of camp spirit,” said the release.
The release said YMCA day camps provide a wealth of opportunity for kids to get active and build healthy habits while having fun.
Additionally the release said that to ensure all youths have the chance to experience camp, the Wheeler YMCA offers financial assistance to those in need.
