Two gymnasts at Plainville’s Farmington Valley Gymnastics chalked up a good deal of success at the U.S. Gymnastics Association regional competition for New England in Woburn, Mass. April 27
FVG’s Sydni Spencer, 13, a student at the Middle School of Plainville, and Emily Mulcunry, 11, a student at Chippens Hill Middle School in Bristol were members of the Level 8 gymnastics team representing Connecticut
Sydney, who picked up first place in the vault in the state competition, continued her domination of the event, by taking first place in vault at the regionals. Spencer, who was making her second trip to the regionals, also finished ninth in the all-around.
Emily was making her first appearance at the regionals, and acquitted herself well with a 16th place all-around score.
“Sydni kicked butt, finishing on top of the podium as the Level 8 regional vault champion,” said FVG coach Erin Fascendini.
Winning the vault competition, said Sydni, “means a lot because I put in a lot of hard work and my coaches helped me a lot too. I say it paid off.”
When she completed the winning vault, Sydni said she didn’t know what to expect from the judges. “I felt it was a really good vault but it wasn’t one of my highest scores. So I was kind of unsure until the awards.”
“Not only did she win vault for her age group, but she also had the third highest vault score of the weekend out of the close to 300 athletes from all over New England. Sydni also impressively finished 9th in the all around and aided in Connecticut finishing third as a team.”
As impressive as ninth place was Sydni, and though it felt good, she said she plans to work even harder for next year.
As for her other gymnast in the regionals, Fascendini said, “I am very proud of Emily with her first experience at the regional championships. She had one of her best routines of the season, nailing all of her routines and scoring her second highest all around score as a level 8 (36.4) in a very challenging and competitive age groups. She finished 10th on balance beam and 16th in the all-around.”
“I felt good (about my performance) because I was glad I did good and got a good all-around,” said Emily.
Emily also said she learned a thing or two from her fellow competitors. “They were all really good, too”
Coach Fascendini said, “I am very proud of both Emily’s and Sydni’s hard work and accomplishments, showing a great representation of Farmington Valley Gymnastics and Connecticut.”
