Within the next month, Plainville will have a unique Irish pub-style atmosphere, offering authentic Irish-American cuisine, over 30 types of draft beer, live entertainment, and more at the soon-to-open Waxy O’Connor’s Irish Pub.
The 7,000 square foot pub is opening up adjacent to the Fairfield Inn & Suites, located just off I-84 at 400 New Britain Ave., and will be the company’s seventh establishment in the United States.
The first pub opened up in 1997 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.., by Al McKenna and Mark Rohleder. Al’s son Paul McKenna is the operations manager for the locations, and said his family comes to the country from County Monaghan in Ireland and the owners have incorporated their Irish heritage and culture into their pub locations.
Patrons can expect traditional Irish-American food, Paul McKenna said, like lamb, sheperds pie, fish and chips, Guinness beef stew and more.
“We’re going to appeal to the entertainment crowd,” McKenna said, referring to pool tables, live bands, a patio, juke box, dart board, and several big-screen televisions. Even though that sounds like a typical sports bar, there will be the Irish feel inside. Every bar that is built in each Waxy O’Connor’s pub is handcrafted in Ireland by Truwood Ltd., which has partnered with Waxy’s.
“It’s like an American sports bar with the Irish warmth,” McKenna said, adding that he is looking forward to having this location in Plainville and being part of the local community. “It’ll be a big space with a good mix of old elements and modern features,” McKenna said, adding that he has noticed the public has enjoyed that type of atmosphere at the other locations.
Waxy O’Connor’s Pub is expected to open in the beginning of June, and the company is currently hiring and anyone interested should visit the company’s website at www.waxys.com.
