Chamber makes plans for annual dinner

The Plainville Chamber of Commerce is holding the 109th awards dinner and annual meeting on April 18 at Nuchies Restaurant, 164 Central St., Forestville. The reception and social hour will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The social hour will include a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres.

Throughout the evening, awards will be presented to individuals and organizations in three categories. Executive director Maureen Saverick sent applications to businesses in the chamber so they could make nominations for the awards.

“I don’t select the recipients,” Saverick said. “There is a committee who reviews the nominations and picks who they think is best.” The group received applications in February and got to work in choosing which locals will be honored during the dinner.

The Wheeler Regional Family YMCA is being honored with the business recognition award, which is given each year to a business within the chamber. The organization is a branch of the YMCA of Greater Hartford and offers programs to the community such as kids and teen sports, childcare, day camps, teen leadership, adult sports, fitness, and more. Aside from the business award, individuals in Plainville are also honored.

“The Distinguished Volunteer Award went to Leona Bisson for her many volunteer activities through Our Lady of Mercy Church,” Saverick said.

Bisson is an altar server and Eucharistic minister at Our Lady of Mercy, delivers Meals on Wheels, helps with the gift program and teaches religious education. Additionally, she assists at Apple Rehab every month.

The Employee of the Year Award is being distributed to two people this year, both employees at Mastrianni & Seguljic, Attorneys at Law. Stephanie Gibbons and Coral Garry-Lord, are paralegals for the firm and will be recognized for their work. Mastrianni & Seguljic is a full-service law firm offering services in personal injury, motor vehicle offenses, real estate, family law, bankruptcy, descendant’s estates, and more.

The event is open for anyone to attend, not just chamber members. “It’s a chance for anyone to come and get involved, but also to support the award winners,” Saverick said.

Tickets are $40 per person or $300 for a table of eight. To purchase tickets, make checks payable to Plainville Chamber of Commerce and mail to P.O. Box C, Plainville, CT 06062. R.S.V.P by Friday, April 12.

Dinner will be served family style, including salad, pasta, chicken, pork, vegetables, potatoes, rolls, and dessert with coffee and tea.

Four winners will go home with a raffle basket, each with a different theme. All raffle tickets for the baskets and the 50-50 raffle will be sold at the door.
