Plainville boys soccer secured a spot in Wednesday’s Class M semifinals with a dramatic upset of second-seeded Granby Memorial on Nov. 10. The Blue Devils, seeded 23rd, faced third-seeded Stonington on Wednesday in the semifinal game at Middletown High School’s Rosek-Skubel Stadium.
As for the Granby quarterfinal, it took 100 minutes of play and a round of penalty kicks for a winner to be decided. The teams entered penalty kicks tied 1-1. Plainville outscored Granby 5-4 on penalty kicks, but the biggest play came from senior goalkeeper Sergio Zaldivar. Zaldivar stuffed the final Bear penalty kick with his right hand, setting off a wild celebration from the Blue Devils and their fans.
Pat Gryczewski, Mikey Torres, Jamie Raucci, Logan Miller and Dane Stevens all scored in the first round of five penalty kicks. Granby matched Plainville goal for goal until its last PK. That’s when Zaldivar made the biggest save of his career and catapulted the Blue Devils into the semifinals.
The winner of Plainville-Stonington plays for the state title on Saturday at a time and place to be determined.
Plainville upended No. 10 Montville 4-1 on Nov. 6 on the road in the first round, then toppled No. 26 Northwestern 3-1 on Nov. 8 at home in the second round. Stevens, Tanner Rau, Gryczewski and Joe Paige scored for Plainville in the Montville win, then Torres went for a hat trick against Northwestern. Stevens assisted on all three of Torres’ goals against Northwestern.
No. 23 Plainville saw its season end with a 1-0 road loss to No. 10 Weston in a Class M first round game on Nov. 5. The Lady Devils finished with a record of 5-7-5. It was the final game for Plainville seniors Kayla DiTolla, Isabella Niziolek, Rachel Parsons, Sam Tomczyk, Olympia Bielawski, Andrea Nilson, Kara Beloin, Ebelyn Rodriguez, Caitlin Barker and Madeline Rund.
Girls swimming and diving
Plainville competed in the Class S state swim meet on Wednesday night at Wesleyan University. The Lady Devils first went through the qualifying meet, which was held on Nov. 10 at Cheshire High School. Morgan Rogers went into the state finals seeded fourth in the 100 backstroke and fifth in the 200 individual medley. Plainville’s 200 medley relay of Morgan Rogers, Emma Miller, Isabella Samperi, and Lydia Weinberg was seeded ninth. The 200 freestyle relay of Samperi, Phoebe Gediman, Rogers and Weinberg was seeded 10th. Weinberg was seeded 14th in the 50 freestyle and 15th in the 100 freestyle while Samperi was seeded 21st in the 500 freestyle.
