It was an up-and-down spring in 2018 for Plainville High School sports. Baseball and outdoor track and field made the most noise out of the Blue Devil contingent.

Here’s what happened in each sport:

Baseball

Plainville finished the regular season 7-13 (5-11 CCC), but wound up making the Class M state tournament to help fill out the 32-team bracket. The Devils took advantage of their opportunity and upset No. 4 Montville, 1-0, on the road. In the second round, Plainville’s season ended in a 7-0 loss to No. 13 East Catholic.

Girls Track & Field

The Lady Devils finished fourth in the CCC South Division meet, but they had the lone individual track and field champion, junior Samantha Lozefski, who took first in the long jump (16’6”). Lozefski wound up third in the triple jump at the same meet behind junior teammate Sydni Spencer, who took second. Spencer finished second in the 100m hurdles and helped the 4x100m relay team take second. Junior Amy Muller was part of that 4x100m relay, as were seniors Hannah Zelasko and Elisabeth Tanguay. Tanguay finished second in the 300m hurdles. Junior Cheyenne Gregory was fourth in the discus.

At the Class M state meet, Spencer took sixth in the 100m hurdles and seventh in the triple jump. Gregory finished seventh in the discus while Lozefski was eighth in the long jump. Plainville finished 24th out of 32 teams.

Boys Track & Field

The Devil boys finished third out of seven teams in the CCC South meet, then took 19th out of 30 teams at the Class M championships. Plainville’s 4x400m relay finished second and was made up of sophomore Felix La Oz, along with juniors John Siani, Tim McCrorey and Sam Lestini. The 4x100m relay took fourth and was made up of sophomore Angel Wren, junior Dominic Pedrolini, La Oz and junior Chad Girard. The 4x800m relay was also fourth, and it was comprised of senior Joel Oyola, McCrorey, junior Andrew Kane and freshman Darius Correa. Individually, junior Brendan Quilter took fourth in the pole vault, Siani was fifth in the 400m, junior Marcos Gutierrez was fifth in the 110m hurdles and junior Jason Mills took seventh in the shot put. Junior brothers Cole and Connor McNamara were sixth and seventh in the 3200m.

Plainville had some strong seniors at the CCC South meet. Collin Martin finished second in the discus and third in the shot put. Nick Costantini was second in the pole vault, Wyatt Rita was third in the discus, Edgar Wynkoop tied for third in the high jump, and Jailen Lindsey placed fifth in the long jump.

At the Class M state meet, Martin finished second in the shot put and the discus. Cole and Connor McNamara took 11th and 12th in the 3200m. In the 4x800m relay, the team of McCrorey, Oyola, Connor McNamara and Siani finished 10th.

Softball, Tennis

Softball, girls tennis and boys tennis each missed the postseason. Softball finished 6-14 (5-11 CCC), girls tennis went 5-10 and boys tennis was 3-13. Boys golf finished 23rd out of 26 teams at the CCC tournament while the girls were 16th out of 16 teams.
