The Plainville Choral Society is heading into their 50th anniversary year, and in preparation for this milestone, the group has several events planned in order to bring a little more music to their hometown.
PCS began as a church group 50 years ago that eventually outgrew their borders, and now includes members from more than nine communities, including Plainville. At the time, the group focused solely on singing, but throughout the years it expanded to include several performance shows as well.
Unlike many community singing groups, said PCS member Eileen Glancy, Plainville’s group does not ask members to be able to read sheet music, or even to pay a membership fee.
“We do work hard but we really enjoy being there,” said Glancy. “We come out and we’re relaxed and also kind of hyper—because I never get to sleep after rehearsal. But, it’s very rewarding and it’s very energizing.”
Debi Wishart-Parker, president of PCS, said that currently the 50 members range in ages from 20 to 90 years old, and the group is always looking for new members—regardless of experience. The group is currently being directed by Toffolon Elementary School music teacher, Greg Wilfrid.
“[He’s] great because he’s a music teacher at Toffolon, so he’s used to all the different grades and all the different levels, and some of the kids are great and some of the kids are not great, just like in our group,” said Wishart-Parker. “We have some amazing singers, and then we have people who just like to sing, and that’s what’s so wonderful about our group—we take anybody and everybody.”
While the group’s official 50th anniversary celebration will take place in May 2020, featuring a variety of songs from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, there are several upcoming performances and fundraisers. On Saturday, Nov. 30, the group will be hosting a bake sale at Gnazzo’s Food Center. The PCS annual Christmas performance will be held on Friday, Dec. 13, and Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 355 Camp St., Bristol. And in February 2020, the group will hold a showcase event, highlighting the skills of past, present, and future members.
