Hillscrest home lights up the night

Joshua Brunelle’s memorial light display at 15 Hillscrest Road has become a holiday tradition in Plainville.

This past weekend marked the opening night of Joshua’s Christmas Display, known throughout town as Lights on Hillscrest – an awesome display of music and holiday lights to welcome in the Christmas spirit, and pay tribute to a former Plainville resident.

Joshua Brunelle, who resides at 15 Hillscrest Road, explained that the display began after losing his mother, Jill, in 2011.

Brunelle said that each year the display has gotten bigger and bigger, and this year was no exception. In addition to the 30 foot mega tree seen front in center in the front yard, three ten foot trees were added along the drive way, as well as an LED flag and music to honor and thank the United States military.

The Hillscrest House front yard is lined with an army of beloved characters such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Snoopy the Dog, Spongebob Squarepants, Winnie the Pooh, and the Nutcracker’s toy soldiers.

“We’ve added a lot more blow molds, a lot more lights, but we kind of got rid of some of the inflatables just because of the snow and stuff.,” said Brunelle. “But there’s going to be a lot more music added for people –  it’s going to be more of a lights show than a static display.”

In addition to offering a life size letters to Santa mailbox, the Brunelle crew also added a charitable section to the display by collecting nonperishable food items for the Plainville Community Food Pantry.

Residents lined Hillscrest Road as they waited for the display to begin, some even flew a drone above the crowd in order to get a better view, and more still took to social media to share the opening night with their friends and family.

“Thank you to everyone for coming out and enjoying the lights, and I hope you enjoy them for many more years,” said Brunelle.
