It was a very up-and-down week for the Plainville baseball team. The Blue Devils began the week with close home wins over RHAM and Somers, but they lost lopsided games to Bristol Eastern at home and Bristol Central on the road.
Plainville’s record is 11-7 with two games left in the regular season. The Devils were scheduled to play at Berlin on Monday, followed by the regular season finale on Wednesday at home against Plainfield.
Plainville started the week with a 5-4 win over RHAM on May 14. Wyatt Lacombe’s walk-off walk gave the Devils the win in the bottom of the eighth inning. Plainville trailed 4-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, but Tyler St. Onge’s single drove in Brady Callahan to tie the game. Alec Couture picked up the win on the mound.
Plainville held on for a 7-5 win over Somers on May 15. Juan Camacho had three hits and two RBI for the Devils. St. Onge had two hits and two runs scored while Couture had two hits, one run scored and one RBI. Lacombe added a hit and RBI. Tyler Dufour was the winning pitcher and Ryan Snyder recorded a one-out save.
Plainville fell behind by seven runs in the first two innings against Bristol Eastern this past Friday and lost 7-1. Lacombe had two hits and an RBI while Mason Sarra added two hits and a run scored. Callahan also had two hits.
Plainville cut a six-run deficit in half against Bristol Central this past Saturday at Muzzy Field, but the Rams scored eight runs in their last two at bats and beat the Devils 14-4 in six innings. St. Onge had two hits and an RBI while Tyler Mandeville added two hits, a walk and a run scored. Callahan, Couture and Brennan Staubley all had one RBI for Plainville.
Track and field
Plainville celebrated its 23 seniors before its home dual meet against Berlin on May 14. The boys defeated the Redcoats 94.5-55.5 while the girls lost 81-69.
In the boys portion of the meet, seniors Connor McNamara and Cole McNamara traded places in the 1600m and 3200m races. Connor was first in the 1600m while Cole was second. In the 3200m, Cole was first, followed by Connor in second. Senior Jason Mills was a double winner. Other senior first place finishers were: Sam Lestini; Brendan Quilter; and Sergio Zaldivar. Sophomore Tyshawn Johnson was a double winner, and the Devils also captured the 4x400m relay.
For the girls, senior Sydni Spencer won four events while fellow senior Cheyenne Gregory was a double winner. Senior Callie Donahue and junior Simona Barbagallo each had a first place finish.
Plainville was scheduled to compete in the CCC South Division championship meet on Tuesday at Middletown High School.
Plainville followed a loss to South Windsor with a win at New Britain. The Devils improved to 3-8 and are scheduled to host Manchester and Newington at Hawk’s Landing Country Club in Southington on Monday, followed by another home match against Berlin on Wednesday.
Plainville sandwiched two wins around a loss in three road matches last week. The Devils improved to 8-5 and are scheduled to play at Southington on Monday and at Platt on Tuesday, followed by New Britain at home on Wednesday to conclude the regular season.
Plainville won two of its three matches last week and is 6-9. The Devils need to win all three of their matches this week – New Britain on Monday, Bristol Central on Tuesday, Newington on Wednesday – to qualify for the Class S team tournament.
Plainville lost two matches last week to drop to 2-12. The Devils were scheduled for a two-town doubleheader against Rocky Hill (home) and Berlin (away) on Monday, followed by a home match against Bristol Central on Wednesday to end the season.
